I was in high school when I got my first internet based communication...an E-mail. Wow what a loser I was! No but seriously...my parents raised me with very limited technology. No TV (we started watching movies on my dad's laptop when I was in middle school) no cellphone ( I started hiding one from my parents starting in 11th grade) no e-mail, no myspace, no facebook...crazy! I got an email finally at the end of ninth grade because my boyfriend at the time was returning to Germany after his seven months in America and "how oh how" was I suppose to communicate with him?! My dad actually was the one who helped me set up my first email account (D_lucca) he thought it sounded super cool like "Deeee Lucca," and to be honest I still have that account to this day. Anyway I got a Facebook account soon after that. Now I was met with all the worries that my friends had " Is my profile picture cute enough?" " OMG do you think hes gonna friend request me?"

I remember the first time I was super upset about a photo that someone posted of me to Facebook. It was taken at a New Years Eve party that I went to my Senior year of High School. The photo was of me leaning over a beer-pong table taking a shot. First of all it was NOT a flattering picture, and second of all their was obvious underage drinking go on and I was very worried that someone would see that picture and tell my parents what I had REALLY been doing that New Years...

My relationship with social media has changed to some extent and remains the same in others. I still go through my Facebook pictures and friends every few months and try to weed out the...well..."weeds." I still check my Facebook a few times each day, especially now that I have an ipad since it makes it super simple. Its fun to see whats going on with other peoples lives, what their doing, planning, thinking and seeing. Yet I also have a new obsession with Pinterest. I find it very meditative and relaxing to look at inspirational quotes, pictures, cute fashion, jewelery, and workout and eating plans and routines. I do find myself laughing to myself and blocking some people from my Facebook "news feed" because they simply take up to much of my feed with their negative lives, pictures of food, or their newest boyfriend and how "happy and in-love" they are. A lot of people have this same experience, some really putting their opinions out there like this girl who posted about the "The 25 pictures girls need to stop posting in social media." I highly agree with her in some of these pictures, like #13, seriously the worst. First of all I just want to say that I thing confidence is AWESOME and I am all for people loving who they are and what they look like, but I find when people are constantly taking pictures of themselves they are looking for the affirmation from others that they are cute, hot, skinny, sexy...whatever it may be. Yet on others I think shes a little harsh. Like #8 I do get what shes saying but she is posting a picture of a guy, so maybe this rant should be posted " Pictures that need to stop being posted in social media" and don't just target females. Also #17 is super cool. It could just be me who thinks this but let me tell you, I have tried to make latte art and it is hard. I also think that whoever did make this latte was hoping that the paying customer WOULD take a picture of the art they just put a lot of effort into making.

But to think about social networking for more of a professional purpose, it has been a drawback and also a great source for information and making connections. With the boom of social networking and being able to access the media and news from the internet Journalism saw a huge drop in the buying of newspapers which made a lot of news companies have to cut back, make changes, and lay off employees. Social networking has made it so that Journalists have more and more work they need to do. They can no longer just write an article, they have to tweet about it, update the website, write on their Facebook page and maybe even Instagram a picture or two. In this article posted by The Washington Post  Ezra Klein looks at which social networking sites are most used by Journalists and why. Some of the information doesn't really add up...why is Pinterest being used more then Twitter by Journalists? This question is not really answered, but Klein admits that many Journalists prefer using Twitter because breaking news happens so much on this social networking outlet, as well as because since so many Journalists use this outlet they are able to make connections, show off your writing style, and perhaps make connections for new jobs or stories. While Facebook on the other hand is made up of more readers who are looking to, well yes, read news. But the Facebook forum allows more of a integration between the Journalists, reporters and their audiences. Readers are able to share news and stories they find interesting and are able to comment on what they think about the article, or what they think would make a good future story.

In the end. Bottom line. I'm a pretty big fan of social networking, and even though I don't have a Twitter this youtube video made me want to start it...check it out...their tunes are pretty catchy;)
